On December 9, 2011, the IRS released Notice 2012-1, which updates the mileage rate used for a variety of IRS deductions and programs. Effective on or after January 1, 2012, the reimbursement for mileage incurred in conjunction with health care expenses will be $.23 per mile. Previous mileage rates are in the table below.

An independent contractor conducts an annual study for the IRS of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile to determine the standard mileage rates for medical use.
